Trump Considers Moving 2026 World Cup Matches Over Crime Concerns in Democratic Cities

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has once again intertwined politics with sports, turning his attention to the host cities of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In an interview with American television, Trump’s Chief of Protocol Monica Crowley revealed that the President is deeply concerned about rising crime rates in “blue” cities—those governed by the Democratic Party—and is reportedly in talks with FIFA about potentially relocating matches.
Crowley stated that Trump is closely monitoring the situation in these cities, where crime rates have reportedly surged, and is in direct contact with FIFA to ensure the safety of foreign tourists and American fans attending the event.
She clarified that no final decision has been made yet, but Trump’s main priority is to guarantee that spectators face no risk while attending matches in the United States.
In the past, Trump has labeled Democratic-run cities as crime hotspots to justify deploying federal forces, although official statistics often contradict these claims. Many of his allegations have faced legal challenges from state and local authorities.
It is notable that among the 11 U.S. host cities for the 2026 World Cup, only Dallas and Miami are under Republican control, while the remaining cities—including Atlanta, Boston, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Seattle, and San Francisco Bay Area—are led by Democrats.
Trump has specifically targeted cities like Boston, Los Angeles, and Seattle, threatening to relocate matches if he perceives any potential risk.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has not publicly responded to Trump’s threats, but experts note that contracts with host cities are legally binding, making any changes extremely challenging.
The 2026 World Cup will also be played in Canada and Mexico, marking the first-ever three-country event, featuring 48 teams divided into twelve groups of four. The tournament draw was announced last night.
According to Crowley, over 2 million tickets have already been sold, and Trump’s intervention could politicize the global sporting event. Democratic leaders have condemned the move as highly irresponsible, while Trump supporters argue it ensures national security.
