Court dismisses Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI

The high-profile three-week trial in California federal court has ended in Musk’s favor. After deliberating for nearly two hours, a nine-member jury ruled that Musk had overstayed his lawsuit and missed the statute of limitations. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers dismissed the case, declaring the jury’s decision a final decision.

The dispute revolves around OpenAI’s original vision. Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and invested about $38 million. After they parted ways in 2018, they argued that CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman had turned their backs on the company’s nonprofit vision and secretly turned their backs on it. They wanted Altman removed from the board and the money paid to the company’s charitable arm.

OpenAI and Altman have denied the allegations, saying they never promised to keep the company nonprofit forever. He also said that Musk was aware of the entire situation but resorted to litigation when he could not get unilateral control over the company.
Several important figures, including the CEO of Microsoft, testified in this trial, while Greg Brockman told the court that his share in OpenAI is worth about $30 billion.
