A new rule has been introduced in England's domestic county cricket this season, under which a substitute player can be included in place of an injured player during a match. Essex became the first team to benefit from this rule.
During the match, Essex captain Tom Westley was hit by a ball from Hampshire fast bowler Sonny Baker, which injured his finger and he retired hurt on 28 runs. Later, the medical team confirmed that he could not play any more matches.
In this situation, the team took permission from match referee Steve Davies and included 21-year-old all-rounder Noah Thain in the team, thus becoming the first injury replacement player to be included in county cricket under this new rule.
However, according to the referee's decision, Noah Thain has only been allowed to bat while he will not be able to bowl, which has given the team the opportunity to use 12 batters.
Under the new rules, Tom Westley will also face a mandatory eight-day break, due to which he will not be able to play the next match.
This rule, introduced by the England and Wales Cricket Board, has been designed keeping in mind the experiences of other countries, with the aim of providing convenience to teams in case of unexpected injuries.
