WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has announced that the app will stop working on phones running Android 5.0 and 5.1 from September 8, 2026. After this date, at least Android 6.0 will be required to use WhatsApp. Users who remain on the older version will not be able to send or receive any messages after September 8.
WhatsApp Beta Info has also shared an alert screenshot in which users are being warned in advance that the app will not work on this device later this year. This announcement has been made so that users have enough time to update their phones or back up chats.
Android 5.0 and 5.1 were introduced around 2014 and 2015 and these old phones are still being used in poor and remote areas in many countries around the world, so this decision could affect millions, if not billions, of users. It would be better for such users to update their phone's software as soon as possible or consider getting a new phone.
