YouTube introduces in-app messaging feature

YouTube has begun rolling out its new in-app messaging feature after a testing phase. The feature aims to give users the opportunity to connect with each other directly within YouTube on their favorite videos.

The new feature will see a new messaging icon appear in the top right corner of the YouTube app. Through this, users will be able to share videos, shorts, and live streams, as well as have one-on-one conversations.

However, the special thing about this system is that to start a direct conversation with a person, they will first have to send them an invitation link. This link will remain active for seven days and can be shared via WhatsApp or any other app. The aim is to make it easier to connect with friends and family members instead of strangers.

According to YouTube, users had high demand for this feature during the test last year. Interestingly, the company was providing a similar type of messaging service until 2019, which was later discontinued.

Now when a user clicks on the invitation link, they will have to choose between ‘Continue Messaging’ or ‘Not Now.’ That’s why this feature has been limited mostly to sharing and discussing videos rather than being a full-fledged social chat platform.
