Kane Williamson announces retirement from international cricket

New Zealand's legendary batsman and former captain Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket.

The 35-year-old Williamson has decided to retire with immediate effect and will not play in the remaining two matches of the ongoing three-Test series against England.

He said in his statement that he had been considering this decision for a long time and now he felt that the time was right.

Kane Williamson has retired as the most successful batsman in New Zealand's Test history. He has:

  • Scored 9,515 runs in 110 Test matches
  • 7,256 runs in ODIs
  • 2,575 runs in T20 Internationals

His biggest achievement was leading New Zealand to its first World Test Championship title in 2021. As captain, he also led the team to the finals and semi-finals of several global competitions.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walters called him not only a great player but also an exemplary leader and an excellent ambassador for cricket.
