New Glass Storage Technology Introduced that can last for 10,000 years

Scientists have developed a new method of storing data that is being considered a revolutionary development for the future of human history. In this technology, information is stored in a special glass modified with a laser in a way that it can be preserved for thousands of years.

According to experts, this glass creates three-dimensional dots, called voxels, on a very fine surface to encode storage data. After information is recorded in these microscopic structures, it can be preserved without deterioration for an estimated 10,000 years.

The amount of information is increasing rapidly in the digital age, but current storage sources such as hard disks or magnetic media deteriorate over time. Due to this problem, preserving data for a long time has become a major challenge.

In view of this need, Microsoft researchers are working on ‘Project Silica’. In this project, three-dimensional data patterns are written inside the glass using a special laser, which can later be read by a special optical system.

In the past, glass was considered a long-term information storage medium, but it was not possible to write data on it and retrieve it. This obstacle has been removed after new developments, which are expected to preserve important historical, scientific and cultural records for thousands of years in the future.
