For the first time in history, wind and sun generated more electricity than gas

A historic moment has arrived in the world of energy. According to a report by international energy think tank Ember, wind and solar energy surpassed gas for the first time in April 2026. Wind and solar generated 22 percent of global electricity generation, while gas was limited to only 20 percent.

The figures illustrate the importance of this achievement. In April, wind and solar generated a record 531 Terawatt Hours of electricity, while gas generated 477 Terawatt Hours, which is 54 Terawatt Hours less. Just five years ago, in 2021, these renewable sources were generating only 245 Terawatt Hours of electricity, which is more than doubling in five years.

This achievement is also special because it comes at a time when the whole world is going through an energy crisis due to tensions in the Middle East. Despite this, the world did not turn to gas or coal, but renewable energy met the new demand.

Looking at the country by country, on an annual basis, the UK saw an increase of 35 percent, Australia 17 percent, China 14 percent, the European Union 13 percent, America 8 percent and Brazil 4 percent. Overall, a 13 percent increase was recorded in wind and solar power globally.
