Extreme heat poses a major threat in World Cup 2026, 25% of matches could be held in dangerous conditions

The world body of footballers, FIFPro, has once again expressed serious concern over the dangers of heat during the FIFA World Cup 2026. According to a recent report by World Weather Attribution, almost a quarter of the matches of this tournament to be held in America, Canada and Mexico are likely to be played in conditions where temperatures will be dangerous for both players and fans. At least 5 of the 104 matches could be played in weather conditions where postponement of the match may be recommended.

Experts have estimated this with the help of the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, or WBGT Index, which tests how well the human body can keep itself cool in the heat. FIFPro Medical Director Vincent Gouttebarge said that if the WBGT goes above 26 degrees Celsius, special measures become necessary and it is recommended to stop the match above 28 degrees.

The highest risk will be in Miami, New York, Philadelphia and Kansas City and temperatures are likely to reach dangerous levels even during the final match. Experts say that extreme heat will not only be harmful to health but also to the quality of the game as teams will be forced to adopt more cautious and defensive strategies. FIFA has said that various safety plans have been developed, including cooling systems, hydration breaks and medical facilities, but FIFPro does not consider these measures sufficient yet and is calling for more concrete measures.
