Decision to introduce new system through targeted subsidy on petroleum products through technology

In an important meeting held in Islamabad, the federal government and the provinces have agreed to continue working together for targeted subsidy on petroleum products, while it was also decided to finalize this system soon through modern technology.

The meeting was chaired by Muhammad Aurangzeb, in which the Petroleum Division gave a briefing on the fuel situation in the country and said that the oil supply is stable.

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication Pakistan suggested that the subsidy system be made digital to ensure transparency and effective delivery. For this purpose, it was considered to deliver the subsidy to the deserving people through a mobile app.

Provincial representatives also presented their views in the meeting. Murad Ali Shah appreciated the uninterrupted supply of fuel and stressed on encouraging savings, while Maryam Aurangzeb talked about passing on the benefits of the decline in global prices to the people.

Furthermore, Muzammil Aslam and Mir Shoaib Nosherwani also presented suggestions in the meeting and appreciated the government’s efforts.

Officials clarified that the government has limited financial capacity, so any relief package will need to be tailored to economic stability. The Finance Minister stressed that data-based decisions are essential for transparency in the tax and subsidy system.

At the end of the meeting, it was agreed that a modern system of targeted subsidies would be introduced soon and close coordination between the federation and the provinces would be maintained.
