Colombian singer Shakira has won a major legal victory. Spain’s High Court has acquitted her of tax fraud and ordered her to repay more than 60 million euros in fines, including interest, she had previously paid. The court said the charges could not be proven based on the evidence.
The story of the case begins from 2012 to 2014. Prosecutors alleged that Shakira was living in Spain during this time but kept showing her residence in another country in her tax records, which led to an alleged tax evasion of 14.5 million euros. Shakira’s position was that she spent most of her time on international music tours during this time and declared Spain her regular tax residence in 2015. She had already paid 17.2 million euros in tax.
After the verdict, Shakira said that she wanted a peaceful life with her children and did not want her sons to see their mother in this long legal battle. He said that the mental stress of this case is now over and that the Spanish tax authorities had taken a tough stance towards him.
