Plan to install 10 million smart meters in Pakistan, electricity theft and billing problems will end

Under the agreement between the Power Division and the IFC, a plan has been prepared to install smart meters on about one crore connections across the country, for which local and foreign investment will be obtained.

Under this plan, installation of smart meters has been made mandatory for new electricity connections and the issuance of traditional meters has been completely stopped. In addition, all old meters of three-phase consumers will also be converted into smart meters in a phased manner, while commercial and industrial consumers will also be included in this digital system.

Thanks to the global competitive process, it has been possible to reduce the prices of smart meters by up to 40 percent. The approval of NEPRA has also accelerated the installation process.

According to the government, this step will significantly reduce electricity theft, improve transparency in the billing system and improve the financial performance of the power sector.
