ECB decides to impose financial discipline on county clubs

The England and Wales Cricket Board has announced tougher rules to curb financial irregularities in county cricket. Under the new system, clubs that continue to make losses will face penalties in the form of Championship Points deductions.

The system will be trialled for now to give clubs a chance to adapt, but regular penalties will come into effect from 2028. According to the rules, each county club will have to make an overall profit over a four-year period.

The penalty mechanism will be in three stages. In the first year, the ECB will only issue a warning if they make a loss, in the second year if the matter is serious, points will be suspended and in the third year, regular points deductions will begin.

This step is being taken because many county clubs have been in financial difficulties for a long time and the ECB wants the cricket structure to stand on a financially sound basis.
