Technology company Apple is considering introducing a 3D-printed aluminum case for its smartwatch Apple Watch in the future. If this plan comes to fruition, it would be a significant step towards Apple’s widespread use of additive manufacturing.
The company has already made initial use of this technology in the titanium models of the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Apple Watch Series 11. Now, the same method is being considered for aluminum models.
According to the report, the main purpose of this change is to make material use more efficient. In traditional CNC machining, the watch case is made by carving a solid block of metal, during which a lot of metal is wasted. In contrast, 3D printing is used to create the case by layering fine metal powder, which reduces waste.
According to a report by renowned tech reporter Mark Gurman, Apple says that this method uses about 50 percent less raw material in titanium models. If the same technology were used in aluminum cases, it would not only reduce production costs but could also reduce the impact on the environment.
