FIFA has given a full clean chit to video assistant referee Sean Evans, who made the controversial gesture, after an investigation.
According to a report by the British Broadcasting Corporation, during the global broadcast before the match between Germany and Curacao, Sean Evans was seen making an inverted ‘OK’ hand gesture in images from the VAR hub in Dallas.
The gesture was interpreted differently on social media and became a subject of heated debate.
After the FIFA investigation, it was concluded that there was no evidence of any breach of the disciplinary code.
Sean Evans explained that he was unaware of the gesture and that it was just an involuntary and unconscious movement.
According to him, other videos made during the match also show that he was repeatedly making similar gestures while holding a pen.
The 38-year-old official said officiating at the World Cup was the greatest honour of his career and he will continue to assist his fellow referees in the remaining matches of the tournament. He will remain available for future matches once the investigation is complete.
