According to a recent report by global energy think tank Ember, China’s solar exports reached 68 gigawatts in March 2026, double the previous month and 50% higher than the previous record set in August 2025. This amount is equivalent to the entire solar capacity of Spain.
In March, 50 countries made record imports of Chinese solar panels, including India, Nigeria, Kenya, Japan, Australia, the European Union and ASEAN countries. Emerging economies in Asia and Africa saw particularly significant growth.
According to Ivan Graham, senior analyst at Ember, rising fossil fuel prices are giving the solar industry further momentum and the current global conditions are taking the sector to the next stage. Exports were also seeing a surge even before changes to tax rebate rules took effect in April.
Ember’s Global Electricity Review 2026 report shows that record solar power generation in 2025 reduced gas-fired electricity by an amount equivalent to the entire annual LNG exports passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a clear sign of solar’s growing role in global energy.
