Japanese automaker Toyota has begun testing a new engine for a future iteration of its sports car, the GR86. The company introduced the "GR86 Future FR Concept" in Japan’s Super Taikyu racing series, featuring a new 2.0-liter engine.
In this experimental vehicle, the previously used turbocharged engine has been replaced by a naturally aspirated, four-cylinder engine. Codenamed "G20E," this engine is reported to produce approximately 220 horsepower and belongs to a new family of compact, lightweight engines developed by Toyota.
Lighter Front End and Improved Accelerator Response
The new engine is expected to reduce weight at the front of the vehicle. Furthermore, by eliminating "turbo lag," the engine’s response to accelerator input becomes more immediate, likely enhancing the overall driving and acceleration experience.
To improve handling, the GR86 Future FR Concept also incorporates a double-wishbone suspension system at both the front and rear. This setup enhances vehicle balance and provides better control when cornering.
Commenting on the new engine's performance, Gazoo Racing driver Kazuya Oshima noted that it is capable of reaching higher RPMs than anticipated.
What Might the Next GR86 Feature?
According to Japanese media reports, this experimental vehicle is referred to internally by the company as "Levin." However, Toyota has not yet made any official announcements regarding the engine or the development of the next-generation GR86. Therefore, it is currently unclear whether the new 2.0-liter engine will be used in future production vehicles. However, this experimental model is being hailed as a significant step forward—encompassing new engine technology, weight reduction, and improved driving performance—for Toyota’s upcoming sports cars.
