The immense popularity of GTA 6, the latest version of the world-famous video game Grand Theft Auto (GTA), has now become a golden opportunity for cybercriminals. New malware and online fraud are specifically targeting PC and Android users.
This is largely because Rockstar Games is only releasing the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S at launch, while the PC version is expected later.
According to NordVPN, the start of GTA 6 pre-orders has activated scammers. They are targeting fans who will not be able to play it immediately despite the game’s official release in November.
The company says that since PC users will have to wait longer for the game, scammers are using this wait to their advantage. They are luring people into something that is currently unavailable to them: early access to GTA 6.
NordVPN has detected fake GTA 6 beta keys, fake subscription offers, and fraudulent websites. Some Android apps are posing as GTA 6 betas, while in reality they are a means of spreading dangerous adware and other malicious software.
Experts have advised users to be wary of any offers, links, or messages related to GTA 6 that spark curiosity or FOMO (fear of missing out).
