Google Maps is preparing to introduce a new artificial intelligence-powered feature designed to provide travelers with information about local landmarks, routes, and amenities upon their arrival in a new city.
According to a report by PhoneArena, this feature is specifically aimed at assisting users who are visiting a city for the first time and are unfamiliar with the local layout or key locations.
A Welcome Message Upon Arrival at the Airport
According to a report by Android Authority, when a user arrives at an airport in a new city, they may receive a welcome message from Google Maps. This message will encourage the user to utilize the app’s "Ask Maps" feature, where they can ask questions about their surroundings and the city itself.
This feature is powered by Google’s AI model, Gemini, which can interpret user queries and provide relevant information. Consequently, travelers will not be limited to simply finding directions; they will also be able to learn about nearby points of interest and local amenities.
Initially Available at Airports in 90 Cities
The report indicates that traces of this feature have appeared in the latest version of Google Maps for Android devices. In the initial phase, the feature may become available at airports in approximately 90 cities worldwide; however, no cities in Pakistan are currently included in this list.
How Does the "Ask Maps" Feature Work?
Google introduced the "Ask Maps" feature in March 2026. It allows users to ask direct questions—rather than relying on traditional search methods—to obtain information related to the map. This includes questions about the destination, travel routes, nearby business centers, and other local points of interest.
The goal of this development by Google is to transform Maps from a simple route-finding app into an intelligent travel assistant—one that can help users navigate and access essential locations even after they have arrived in a new city.
