Out of Rs 414 for petrol, Rs 198 is tax only, the actual price is only Rs 216

Whenever petrol becomes expensive, the government quotes global prices, but the real picture is different. According to Express News, the actual price of petrol is only Rs 216.68 per litre, the rest is taxes and government levies which have reached Rs 198 per litre.
The various charges levied on petrol are as follows:

  • Petroleum Levy: Rs 117.41
  • Customs Duty: Rs 22.74
  • Premium: Rs 29 per litre
  • Oil companies’ profit: Rs 8.64
  • Distribution Margin: Rs 7.87
  • Freight Margin: Rs 7.25
  • Climate Support Levy: Rs 2.50
  • Exchange Adjustment: Rs 2.69

The story of diesel is no different. The actual price of High Speed Diesel is around Rs 301 per litre, while there are separate taxes and charges of Rs 113.71.
The most shocking thing is that the government itself is charging Rs 143.63 per litre for petrol, while the Oil Distribution Companies are charging Rs 54.38 per litre separately. This means that more than half of the money you pay at the petrol pump is not the price of fuel, but rather receipts taken under different names.
