Six years after the death of legendary Indian actor Irfan Khan, a rare and long-lost film of his, 'The Last Tenant', has been released on YouTube on the occasion of his sixth death anniversary. The film was out of the public eye for almost 25 years and is now being seen by the audience for the first time. It was viewed more than two lakh times in just three days of its release, which is a clear testament to the love of Irfan Khan's fans.
The film was made in 2000 with limited resources. It also stars Irfan Khan in a pivotal role and is their only joint screen project. It is also one of Vidya Balan's earliest works. The story of the film revolves around a heartbroken musician who takes refuge in a deserted house before leaving for a foreign country. The story takes an emotional and symbolic journey through a combination of loneliness, past memories and music.
The reason for the long delay in the release of the film was that its original footage was lost and the project was stalled for more than two decades. According to director Sarthak Dasgupta, the film was a forgotten dream for him which is now presented to the world as a tribute to the memory of Irfan Khan. Vidya Balan called the release a very emotional moment in her career and said that this only joint film with Irfan Khan will always be special to her.
