Sony introduces new compact cinema camera FX5

Japanese technology company Sony has introduced the new Sony FX5 in its compact cinema camera series, which is presented with modern features and improved video capabilities.

The new FX5 camera is equipped with a 16.6-megapixel full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor and a BIONZ XR2 processor, which also includes artificial intelligence (AI)-based processing.

The camera can currently record video at 60 frames per second in 5K resolution and 120 frames per second in 4K, while recording at 120 frames per second in 5K and 240 frames per second in 4K will also be available after a future firmware update.

The FX5’s standout feature is Open Gate Recording, through which users can record video in 3:2 format using the full width and height of the sensor.

This feature will be especially helpful in creating vertical videos for social media.

Sony has also provided internal recording of 16-bit linear RAW video for the first time in its FX series, which does not require an external recorder. The camera also supports the company's professional X-OCN format, which allows high-quality video to be stored more efficiently.

The FX5 is the first camera in Sony's FX series to feature Dual Gain Shooting technology, which combines low and high gain to provide better dynamic range and reduced noise.

For better performance in low light, the camera has three basic ISO levels of ISO 800, ISO 4000 and ISO 12800, while according to the company, this camera is capable of providing more than 15 stops of dynamic range.

Sony has not yet announced the price of the FX5 and details of its availability in different markets.
