Microsoft and Nvidia have announced plans for a new Windows laptop featuring powerful artificial intelligence capabilities. Dubbed the "Surface Laptop Ultra," the device aims to further advance the automated use of AI on personal computers.
According to reports, the project focuses on developing Windows PCs capable of performing complex tasks—such as writing code—locally using AI agents. This eliminates the need to rely on cloud computing for every operation, allowing tasks currently processed in expensive cloud data centers to be handled by computers in homes and offices.
This initiative is significant for Microsoft given its long-standing presence in the PC market, where consumers bear the cost of the hardware directly. Meanwhile, Apple is also working to enhance local AI capabilities in its new Mac computers.
A Key Opportunity for Nvidia
The new project offers Nvidia a chance to expand its footprint in the Windows laptop chip market. While Intel and AMD have long dominated this sector, Nvidia aims to strengthen its presence by leveraging the growing importance of AI chips.
The event hosted by Microsoft in San Francisco marks the culmination of a multi-year partnership between the two companies. The aim of this collaboration is to develop computers capable of performing various tasks—including coding and complex business projects—directly on the desktop or laptop, powered by AI chips.
A key milestone in this initiative will be the unveiling of the "Surface Laptop Ultra" by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
However, the device's price has also become a significant question. With the recent rise in computer hardware costs driven by a shortage of memory chips, it remains to be seen how accessible this laptop—equipped with powerful AI capabilities—will be for the average consumer.
