The US technology company Amazon has once again reduced its workforce, laying off hundreds of employees. According to international media reports, the latest layoffs occurred in the company's "Stores" unit, which manages operations for Amazon's main e-commerce website.
This move marks the latest step in a series of ongoing job cuts at Amazon. The company began large-scale layoffs last year—a process that continued through January—resulting in the dismissal of approximately 30,000 employees.
According to a person familiar with the matter, fewer than 1,000 white-collar (office-based) employees were let go in this latest round of cuts.
Amazon has confirmed the recent layoffs. A company spokesperson stated via email that adjustments were made to certain parts of the Stores business.
Citing Over-hiring During the Pandemic
In an interview with Fox News, Amazon founder and Executive Chairman Jeff Bezos attributed the ongoing job cuts to the company's excessive hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He explained that this over-hiring necessitated the subsequent workforce reduction, leading Amazon to cut its staff numbers across various phases.
