Google has added a long-awaited feature to the Android version of Chrome. Now, instead of giving websites their exact location, users will be able to give them an approximate location. This means that no website will be able to know which street or building you are in.
Previously, Chrome used to ask for Precise Location every time, which privacy experts considered an unnecessary request because most websites don’t actually need such detailed location. Now, it will be up to the user to decide how much information to give a site.
Apps or sites that really need precise location, such as Maps or ride hailing services, will have the Precise Location option. Going forward, Google also plans to introduce a new API that will allow web developers to specify in advance whether they want an approximate location or an exact location.
Experts are calling this step a good development in online privacy because when users have control over their own information, using the Internet becomes much safer.
