The government has decided to completely overhaul the system for monitoring the assets of government officials. The Senate Standing Committee on Finance was told in a briefing that the FBR will be empowered to investigate government employees whose assets are more than their legitimate income. This work will be done with the help of AI, which will issue Red Flag Alerts on unusual increases in financial records and then the FBR will be able to initiate an investigation.
Federal Secretary Establishment Division Nabeel Awan said that from December 2026, the assets of all government officials from Grade 17 to Grade 22 will be publicly available through a new Digital Declaration System. Officers will also have to disclose their family assets, foreign trips and other financial details. The FBR Chairman and other top officials will have the authority to immediately initiate investigations into suspicious cases revealed by AI.
If this system is actually implemented, it will be the most modern and stringent way to monitor government wealth in Pakistan. In the past, asset declaration was considered a formality that received little attention, but with the AI-powered system and the investigative powers of the FBR, the matter may now become more serious.
