WhatsApp's new scam alert feature will warn you about fraudulent messages in advance

WhatsApp has started testing a new Scam Alert feature for some Android beta users, which will warn users of potential fraud in the event of suspicious messages.

This feature will alert users when a message is received from someone unknown to the user and WhatsApp’s system finds the conversation suspicious. At this point, the user will be able to decide whether to trust the number or block and report it.

If a user declares a chat as trusted, they will also get the option to share the last five messages of the conversation with WhatsApp. According to the company, this can help improve the accuracy of the feature.

Scam Alert is not mandatory for now. Users will be able to enable it by going to WhatsApp’s Settings > Account and choosing to do so.

According to Meta, this feature uses an on-device machine learning model, which means that the content of the messages is not sent outside the device to classify them.

This new feature is available to some users in WhatsApp for Android Beta 2.26.34.1. However, WhatsApp has not yet announced a final date for its release to all users.
