The Central Asian country of Tajikistan has maintained its ban on the popular video game series Grand Theft Auto (GTA), making it clear that the upcoming sixth edition will also not be available in the country.
Authorities maintain that the GTA series highlights violence, theft, murder and criminal activities and since the game is popular with young people, it is likely to have a negative impact on them.
According to reports, Tajikistan banned several video games, including Counter-Strike, in 2024.
Officials from the Tajik Ministry of Internal Affairs said that the content of these games is incompatible with national values and may encourage crime.
There is currently no indication that the government is considering lifting the ban before the expected release of GTA 6 on November 19, 2026.
According to the report, Tajikistan is not the only country where GTA is banned. Thailand has had a complete ban on the series since 2008, while Malaysia has also imposed various restrictions on violent video games.
Similarly, Germany, Australia, and some Middle Eastern countries also have various types of censorship or regulations in place for games featuring crime, drugs, or other objectionable content.
