Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has denied reports claiming that he might register to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on the basis of his British citizenship. Dismissing these speculations, the cricketer clarified that the reports circulating regarding the IPL are incorrect.
Speculations regarding the IPL following the acquisition of a British passport
34-year-old Mohammad Amir has played 36 Tests, 61 ODIs, and 62 T20 Internationals for Pakistan. He became a British citizen after obtaining a British passport in May of this year, which subsequently led to reports emerging about his potential participation in the IPL.
Amir also participates in various franchise-based cricket leagues; recently, he registered his name for the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) draft as a British citizen. He has been placed in the 'Platinum' category for this draft, which is scheduled to take place in Dubai on Tuesday.
How did the news about his entry into the IPL auction spread?
Citing his registration for the Afghanistan Premier League, a cricket website claimed that Amir might also register his name for the IPL auction, scheduled to be held in Goa on December 16.
The report also cited the example of former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, who represented Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders between 2012 and 2015—despite the existing ban on the participation of Pakistani citizens in the IPL.
Mohammad Amir’s Blunt Response
However, Mohammad Amir promptly dismissed reports regarding his participation in the IPL. In a statement on social media, he clarified that the news circulating about the IPL is incorrect, labeling it as fake.
Following this clarification, speculations regarding Amir registering for the IPL auction have come to an end.
