Despite the significant decline in global oil prices, the government has not provided relief to the public, but on the contrary, has increased the levy.
After the federal government’s decision to maintain the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel, the data shared by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik on social media platform X has sparked a new debate on this decision.
The image released by the Petroleum Minister also shows a significant decline in the prices of petrol and diesel in the global market, however, despite this, consumers have not been given the benefit of further reduction in prices.
According to the data shared by the Petroleum Minister, the price of petrol in the global market on June 22 was $98.35 per barrel, which decreased by $6.67 in just 4 days to $91.68 per barrel on June 26.
Similarly, the price of high-speed diesel decreased from $109.09 per barrel on June 22 to $104.79 per barrel on June 26.
Federal Minister Ali Pervez Malik said in his statement that the government is neither giving priority to any one sector nor is it putting unnecessary burden on any other. The government is determined to provide all possible benefits to the consumers while remaining within the ambit of its international obligations.
He said that so far during the tenure of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the price of high-speed diesel has been reduced by a total of Rs200 per liter while the price of petrol has been reduced by Rs155 per liter.
On the other hand, according to sources in the Petroleum Division, the government has also increased the petroleum levy. The levy on diesel has been increased by Rs 6.57 per litre to Rs 79.54 per litre, while the levy on petrol has increased by 39 paise per litre to Rs 66.64 per litre.
Similarly, the government has also announced a reduction in the price of jet fuel used in commercial aircraft by Rs 7.15 per litre, after which its new price has been fixed at Rs 231.72 per litre.
It should be noted that yesterday, the government announced to maintain the current rates for a week instead of reducing the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel proportionately despite the decline in prices in the global market.
According to the official notification, the price of petrol was maintained at Rs 299.50 and the price of high-speed diesel at Rs 311.47 per liter, however, the price of kerosene was reduced by Rs 6.85 per liter to a new price of Rs 227.5 per liter.
With the same decision, the petroleum levy on petrol and diesel was also increased, due to which the full benefit of the reduction in global prices could not be passed on to the public.
