Star Pakistani batter Babar Azam has been signed by the Desert Vipers for $80,000 during the auction for the fifth season of the DP World ILT20. Following this deal, Babar Azam will be seen in action in the UAE-based franchise cricket league.
Babar Azam is currently occupied with the President's Trophy Grade-I in Pakistan, continuing his domestic cricket commitments. Earlier this year, he also delivered impressive performances in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Success as Captain in the PSL
In May, Babar Azam led Peshawar Zalmi to the HBL PSL 11 title. This marked the second PSL title in Peshawar Zalmi's history; the team had previously won its first championship in 2017.
This was also Babar Azam's first PSL trophy as captain. He scored 588 runs during the tournament, finishing as the highest run-scorer. His tally included two centuries, and his outstanding performance earned him the captaincy of the PSL 'Team of the Tournament.'
Desert Vipers Secure Services of an Experienced Batter
With Babar Azam's inclusion, the Desert Vipers have secured a top-order batter who possesses experience playing in both international cricket and various franchise leagues.
His participation in the ILT20 is also expected to boost interest among cricket fans in Pakistan and the UAE. In the Season 5 auction, all six franchises of the league are selecting players to further strengthen their squads.
