Women in Karachi have stepped forward in the manufacturing and assembly of electric bikes

In Karachi, women are no longer limited to merely riding electric bikes and scooters; they are also learning the skills required to manufacture and assemble them. At a local facility, women are actively participating in the production of electric bikes, utilizing power drills, electrical equipment, and other technical tools.

According to the women involved in this field, proper training and continuous hands-on experience have enabled them to master technical tasks typically associated with men.

One female technician shared that she has been working in this sector for about a year and a half. She initially completed an electrician's course but later felt inspired to do something different. Driven by a desire to undertake work that no woman in Pakistan had done before, she chose the manufacturing and assembly of electric bikes as her career path.

Becoming Technicians Through Training

Another woman mentioned that she has been working at the facility for nearly a year. She received the necessary training for electric bike production at the same institution, where she was provided with ongoing guidance. She credits this training for enabling her to work as a fully qualified technician today.

Another woman noted that it took her only two to three months to learn the trade, and she did not have to pay any fees for the training. A mother of two, she shared that when she tells her son and daughter about her work, they are amazed that their mother performs such technical tasks.

A technician named Mehreen mentioned that she was previously employed in the pharmaceutical sector but has now become part of the electric bike manufacturing workforce. According to her, when she tells people that she builds bikes, they often express surprise and ask how she manages such work.

Mehrin says that whenever she sees a man or woman riding an electric bike or scooter on the road, it brings her joy to think that the vehicle might have been assembled by her own hands.

A notable aspect of this project is that it is led by a woman. She believes that if women can lead in various other sectors, the automotive industry should be no exception. Driven by this conviction, she decided not only to manufacture bikes herself but also to involve a large number of women in the process.
