Two and a half years of Shahbaz government, Rs3137 billion collected from petroleum levy

During the two and a half years of the Shahbaz government, citizens had to bear the heavy burden of expensive petrol and diesel as well as petroleum levy. During this period, the government collected a record Rs 3,137 billion in petroleum levy.

According to a private TV report, at the beginning of the current government on March 4, 2024, the price of high-speed diesel per liter was Rs 287.33 paise, which later reached Rs 520.35 paise. Similarly, the price of petrol increased from Rs 279.75 paise to Rs 458.41 paise.

Accordingly, during the current tenure of the government, the price of diesel per liter increased by Rs 233 while the price of petrol increased by Rs 178.66 paise.

According to official documents, during the financial year 2025-26, the federal government collected Rs 1,567 billion in petroleum levy. In addition, more than Rs 50 billion was collected as carbon levy on petrol and diesel.

During the financial year 2024-25, Rs 1,220 billion was collected from petroleum levy, while Rs 299.63 billion was collected in this regard in the April-June quarter of 2024.

Currently, a petroleum levy of Rs 80 per liter is imposed on both petrol and diesel. In addition, a climate support levy of Rs 5.5 per liter is also being collected on both products.

Thus, during the current government, along with the increase in the prices of petroleum products, a huge amount was also collected from the citizens in the form of levy.
