Scotland coach Steve Clarke resigns after World Cup failure

Scotland's 1-2 victory over Ghana ended all hopes of reaching the knockout stages, with national team head coach Steve Clarke resigning from his position shortly after.

Scotland failed to make it into the top eight of the Group L standings and were eliminated from the tournament.

Scottish football officials also confirmed that Steve Clarke was stepping down after seven years in charge.

Scotland returned to the World Cup after 28 years, beating Haiti 0-1 in their first match, but have since struggled against strong opponents.

Brazil also beat Scotland 0-3 after a 0-1 defeat to Morocco in the group stage, leaving them in third place with three points and a three-goal margin.

After the defeat to Brazil, Steve Clarke and the players had already acknowledged that their chances of reaching the last 32 were slim.

Subsequent group results, particularly Croatia's victory over Ghana, also ended Scotland's hopes of progressing further in the tournament.

This is another major tournament in which Scotland has failed to progress beyond the group stage. The team has played in nine World Cups and four European Championships, but has never managed to get beyond the first round on any occasion.
