Pakistan has emerged from economic stagnation and now entered the test of sustainable development

Economic circles in Islamabad say that Pakistan has largely recovered from economic instability and foreign exchange pressures in the past few years. But now the real test has begun.

Recent data shows that the current account was in surplus of $72 million from July to March of the fiscal year 2026. Remittances reached $41.6 billion, while the State Bank’s reserves were recorded at $17.1 billion and total reserves at $22.6 billion as of May 15. The International Monetary Fund has also acknowledged the reforms, improvement in growth and control of inflation.

This progress is important, but experts are making it clear that just getting out of the crisis is not enough. Now there is a need for development that is based on investment and exports and does not create a repayment crisis in the future.

Pakistan’s old problem has been that when the economy accelerates, imports increase, the deficit increases, the rupee comes under pressure and reserves start falling. Therefore, not just fast growth but a different kind of growth is needed.

Experts believe that reducing imports can provide temporary relief, but it also affects investment and production. The real solution lies in increasing exports. The question is why Pakistan is not able to increase exports.

The long-term strategy should be focused on building global competitiveness rather than managing resource scarcity. IT, professional services, engineering and digital commerce are sectors where the young population can be benefited. It is also necessary to make the energy system sustainable and competitive. Along with this, reforms in government institutions, widening the tax net and not burdening those who already pay taxes are also important decisions.
