Important details have emerged regarding changes to the financial assistance disbursement system for eligible women under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). Under the new arrangement, beneficiaries will be able to receive funds through various banks, while the existing system of authorized agents for payments will also remain in place.
According to Dr. Ismat Nawaz, Additional Secretary at BISP, since it is not feasible to have bank branches in every part of the country, the disbursement of funds through authorized agents of the respective banks will continue.
She explained that while banks are accountable to BISP, the responsibility for the agents lies with the respective banks. Through an interoperability feature, eligible beneficiaries will be able to access their funds through various banks at any time and on any day.
How much financial assistance do eligible women receive every three months?
According to Dr. Ismat Nawaz, eligible beneficiaries under the Benazir Income Support Programme receive 14,500 rupees every three months. The purpose of this financial assistance is to support low-income families and help alleviate their economic hardships.
A smartphone is not required for a digital wallet
Clarifying the digital wallet facility, the BISP Additional Secretary stated that a smartphone is not mandatory to utilize this service; eligible women can also access it using a basic mobile phone.
The Benazir Income Support Programme was launched in 2008, and its payment system has undergone various changes over time. The 'Social Protection Wallet' is a significant development in this regard, designed specifically for women eligible under the BISP.
