Dua Lipa files $15 million lawsuit against Samsung

British pop star Dua Lipa has filed a $15 million lawsuit against Samsung in a US court. The allegation is that Samsung used a photo taken of her performing at a 2024 music festival in a TV ad campaign without her permission, and this has been going on since last year.

Dua Lipa’s legal team says that all rights to the photo belong to the singer, Samsung did not ask for permission or pay any compensation. Even bigger is that the use of the photo created the impression that Dua Lipa herself was endorsing Samsung TV, which is completely false.

Why did the matter come to this? Because Dua Lipa first contacted Samsung and requested the photo to be removed, but the company rejected it, leaving her with no choice but to go to court.

The lawsuit seeks action under copyright infringement, trademark laws and California’s Right of Publicity laws. The case is a reminder of how costly it can be legally to use a celebrity’s photo for commercial purposes without permission.
