Tom Cruise's new film failed to meet expectations in its opening week

Despite its large budget and high-profile names, Hollywood star Tom Cruise's new film, Diggar, has failed to meet box-office expectations during its initial run. The film grossed approximately $8 million in North America during its opening week.

According to media reports, Diggar was released in 3,321 cinemas across North America. While initial earnings stood at around $8 million, these figures may see slight adjustments once final data is released.

Film analysts had projected an opening gross of approximately $7.5 million; however, despite Tom Cruise's global fame and the involvement of renowned director Alejandro Gonzez Iñárritu, the film's overall performance remained notably lackluster.

Low Revenue Relative to High Budget

The production cost of Diggar is estimated to be between $160 million and $180 million. Box-office experts suggest that for a film of this scale, an opening-week gross of at least $40 million would have been considered an acceptable start, yet the film failed to come anywhere near that target.

Negative pre-release sentiment and a limited promotional campaign also dampened expectations regarding the film's success.

In the film, Tom Cruise portrays an influential oil tycoon who becomes embroiled in a major environmental crisis. The movie is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, acclaimed for films such as Birdman and The Revenant. Even the Tom Cruise-Iñárritu pairing couldn't save the day

Warner Bros. had anticipated that the involvement of big names like Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu would generate between $18 million and $20 million in box office revenue for Diggar during its opening week; however, the film fell significantly short of these projections.

This lackluster start has raised questions regarding the box office performance of films that rely heavily on major stars, renowned directors, and massive budgets.

Cruise's message prior to release

Before the film's release, Tom Cruise took to the social media platform X to express his delight at being part of Diggar. Thanking the cast and crew, he stated that working with such talented artists was both a pleasure and an honor for him.

According to Cruise, everyone involved in the production worked with hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm, making the experience of working on Diggar truly memorable for him.
