Proposal to hold PSL on January 12 under consideration

The next season of the Pakistan Super League, PSL 12, has been proposed to be held in January next year instead of the traditional April and May window. Consultations are underway between the Pakistan Cricket Board and the league’s eight franchises on this issue.

The PSL Governing Council meeting held in London on September 1 also considered various proposals regarding the new window of the league. According to the report, the media rights holder has suggested holding the event in January, as there is a risk that the income generated from advertising in April and May will be limited.

Holding the PSL in January also has its problems. The availability of foreign players may be affected during this period because the Big Bash League and the South African league are also held during the same period.

The meeting also considered the cold weather and fog in Punjab as a major issue. Due to concerns about holding matches in Punjab in January and February, a proposal was also considered to start the league from Karachi and later shift it to Punjab and Peshawar.

The Governing Council meeting also discussed linking the PSL with various activities throughout the year instead of limiting it to just one annual event. Suggestions were also made to enter the e-sports sector in Pakistan and increase interest in the league among young fans.

In addition, a proposal to hold an additional tournament in the middle of the year is also under consideration. This move is expected to create more revenue opportunities for franchises and broadcasters.
