Netflix decides on major layoffs; approximately 1,000 employees to be let go

Global streaming company Netflix has decided to eliminate approximately 1,000 jobs. This marks the largest workforce reduction at the company since 2022 and is expected to affect a significant number of employees.

According to the news agency Reuters, Netflix co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos informed employees of this decision via an internal memo. The report indicates that the layoffs will primarily impact the company’s product, technology, legal, and human resources departments.

Netflix management states that the business remains strong and continues to grow; however, to achieve its goals as a global provider of entertainment services, it is essential to align its workforce and other resources with its key priorities.

Decline in Share Price and Investor Concerns

Netflix maintains that it is on track to meet the financial targets set for the current year. Nevertheless, investors remain concerned about whether the company will be able to sustain its growth momentum in the future.

According to reports, Netflix’s share price has fallen by approximately 25% so far this year. However, following the news of the job cuts, the company’s shares saw an increase of about 0.7% on Wednesday.

By the end of last year, Netflix had a workforce of approximately 16,000 employees.

Growing Competition from YouTube and TikTok

In the streaming sector, Netflix faces competition not only from traditional media companies but also from platforms such as YouTube and TikTok. Investors are also focused on how much time users spend on Netflix, and whether this trend is increasing or declining.

According to analysts, the reliance on a subscription-based business model could also pose a challenge for the company's future growth.

Netflix had previously carried out large-scale layoffs in 2022. At that time, the company experienced a decline in its subscriber base—the first such drop in over a decade—following which it eliminated approximately 450 jobs in two phases.
