Italy and Romania withdraw support for Infantino

Pressure has mounted on FIFA President Gianni Infantino to step down after the Italian and Romanian football federations withdrew their support for his re-election for a new term.

The Italian Football Federation has announced that it will not support Infantino in the FIFA presidential election in March. The federation said the decision was due to the president’s recent actions on governance and the development of international competitions.

President Giovanni Malaguo said Italy would continue to work with UEFA and other European federations to promote football based on merit, solidarity, sustainability and the importance of fans.

The Romanian Football Federation’s executive committee also decided not to vote for Infantino for a new term. President Răzvan Berlianu said a new leader was needed who could build consensus and unity, restore trust and unite everyone.

Infantino is currently under intense pressure. His plan to sell shares in the World Cup to private investors was particularly criticized, but the plan has now been scrapped.
