Brendon McCullum to be removed as England Test head coach

The England Cricket Board has removed Brendon McCullum from the position of head coach of the Test team, but he will continue to carry out the responsibilities of head coach of the England white-ball team.

Brendon McCullum was appointed head coach of the England Test team in May 2022. Under his coaching, England played 49 Test matches, winning 27, losing 20 and drawing 2 matches.

During McCullum's tenure, England introduced an aggressive "baseball" strategy based on the playing style, which brought significant successes to the team in the early period, but the team's performance has seen a significant decline in recent times.

England have lost 7 of their last 9 Test matches, including a 4-1 defeat in the 2025-26 Ashes series against Australia and a 2-1 series defeat at home to New Zealand last month.

The England Cricket Board will announce a new Test head coach and a new Test captain before the upcoming Test series against Pakistan. Recently, Ben Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket after the series against New Zealand, after which the Test team leadership has also become vacant.
